Julen nærmer sig og i år holder vi juleudstilling for føærste gang på Granborg Gaard.

Det sker SØNDAG, den 4. December

fra kl. 12 til 17

der kommer til at være mange forkellige slags kunst, kunsthåndværk, men også rigtig mange gaveideer, lys, kort, dekorationer, også Jule-blomsterdekorationer og Julemarkedet byder også på mange forskellige kulinariske oplevelser, fra hjemmelaved chocolade til Juleæbler og internationale specialiteter.

Forskellige kunstnere udstiller og der er mange "boder" som sælger al slags lækkerier og brugskunst...

Der er åbne atelierdøre i weekenden fra den 13. til den 14. August. og det er rigtig mange kunstnere som skal være med.

Vores atellier har gennemgået en stor forvandling siden sidste år og der er rigtig mange ting og sager at se på: mange forskellige slags kunst, men også mange spændende ting fra Nordskandinavien, interiør design-genstande og naturligvis også lidt lækkert til ganen!

Am Wochenende vom 13. bis 14. August öffnet das Atellier der Galerie Granborg Gaard die Türen nach einer langen und umfassenden Renovierung! Die Ausstellungsräumlichkeiten sind sehr unik, da untraditionelle Techniken und Materialien verwendet wurden um ein Nordisches und künstlerisch spannendes Milleu zu kreieren.

Die Ausstellung besteht aus verschiedesten künstlerischen Stilen und Richtungen. Darüber hinaus kann man selbsthergestellte Spezialitäten für den Gaumen kaufen und der Hofladen bieten viele Einrichtungsideen an, wie Glas, Porcellan, Kerzen, Servietten, getrocknete Blumen, signierte Kunstkarten und so vieles mehr...

A vegetarian meal which we served recently: squash filled with bean, lentils, tomatoes, cheese, peppers and much more. Surprisingly also very popular with the youngsters. By the way the stuff above the warm dish is a carrot salad/Mediterranean style - tastes like a dream, but looks awful on pictures!

the food has been eaten and the last musicians have just finished...

WENN ES ENDLICH ZEIT WIRD, DAS FEUERWERK ZU BEWUNDERN!

What a better time to find out that... really... our neighbors are pirates! LOL! There is actually quite a bit of truth to that story. Those tiny hamlets and harbors on this almost forgotten island have actually once been quite important and had been, surprisingly enough, flourishing and prospering during the dark ages. This was die to them exporting salted herring to some of the countries surrounding the Baltic. But when religious terms changed and there were no more fasting days that meant also no more financial affluence. After a less peaceful argument with the English the Danish king gave permission for the people to just take what was left of the English fleet in the Baltic. Seems they kept up those skills for a little while just to feed mouths... But today the entire island seems rather sleepy and very peaceful. Nothing much happening. If you wanna see what things were like a 100 years ago, you're in the right place. Lots of nature, fields, harbors, beaches and even some forest. Plus the island is flooded with artists and small, local food producers. The classical cliche of Denmark, but not overrun by tourists, since it's just too natural to satisfy the masses. They drive on, an hour north to Copenhagen!

UND WAS FINDET MAN DANN HERAUS? DIE WERTEN NACHBARN SIND JA EIGENTLICH PIRATEN! WIRKLICH! NUN JA HEUTE NICHT MEHR... ABER DAMALS NACHDEM IM MITTELALTER DIE HERINGSPRODUKTION OF HOCHTUREN GELAUFEN WAR UND FÜR REICHLICH WOHLSTAND GESORGT HATTE, WAR NUN MIT DER REFORMATION PLÖTZLICH SCHLUSS. UND NACH EINER AUSEINANDERSETZUNG MIT DEN ENGLÄNDERN GAB DER DÄN. KÖNIG DIE GENEHMIGUNGM, DIE ÜBERBLEIBSEL DER FLOTTE ZU PLÜNDERN. IRGENDWIE SCHEINT ES, BLIEB MAN DANN DABEI, UM SO ALLE MUNDE SÄTTEN ZU KÖNNEN.

DOCH HEUTZUTAGE IST DIESE FAST VERGESSENE INSEL EHER VERSCHLAFEN UND DEFINITIV EINER DER FRIEDLICHSTEN ORTE IN DÄNEMARK. HIER FINDET MAN EINE FÜLLE VON KÜNSTLER UND KL. We actually had intended to go to Sweden, but it turned out that it was so much nicer here...

It's just really the most wonderful place to be!

But the other day we had a little trip to Germany...

I guess, someone was having an ice-coffee?!

No fighting for deck chairs!

Oh and this is at a small farm close to us... the deer are out all year round...

The season of Joy is over us, the tree is trimmed and the presents packed...

But then all of a sudden mother nature had second thoughts about Winter-wonderland...

however thanks to a number of blizzards we had enough snow left behind our barns and on some of the fields...

so we could take a nice long skiing trip up and down the hills...

It was really nice and lovely to ski towards the beautifully decorated bridge that is crossing over to Zealand.

Here we are on an ancient road which hasn't been used for ages, so you really had to watch out for big wild rose-bushes growing in the middle of it... lol!

We relaxed in our front garden after the trip! we usually end off there, just enjoying the lights for a little bit before we'd go in to have supper...

Snowed in! ¤¤¤ EINGESCHNEIT!

It kind of feels as if we're snowed in!

WIR SIND EINGESCHNEIT!

Don't know why really... but it's kind of dark... and cold... and icy...

DAS KANN MAN NICHT ANDERS AUSDRÜCKEN!

and then there's that white stuff absolutely everywhere!

ABER SCHÖN IST ES...

We kind of managed to get most of the outside work done on the farm

WIR SIND SCHON SKIGELAUFEN...

before winter hit us really hard.

UND HIER KÖNNTE MAN DURCHAUS AUCH AUF SCHNITTSCHUHEN ÜBER DEN TEICH FLITZEN...

But as you can see, it's also really beautiful!

WIR HABEN ES ABER NOCH NICHT AUSPROBIERT... DOCH ICH LIEBE UNSEREN TEICH OBWOHL DIE ANLAGE NOCH NICHT GANZ FERTIG IST - ROMANTISCH IST ES TROTZDEM!

However these pictures only show the beginning and we ended up with a snow-curfew already in November! But really was almost impossible to get out and once the roads were cleared, a new blizzard would make you feel you were at the North Pole or something.

ES GIBT VIEL SCHNEE ZU SCHAUFELN!

We already were out skiing and really one could use the pond for skating as well...

UND WENN MAN EIN SO GROSSES GRUNDSTÜCK HAT, DANN DAUERT DAS ETWAS LÄNGER... DOCH DER PARK IST WUNDERSCHÖN FÜR SPAZIERGÄNGE UND ZUM SKILAUFEN UND ZUM RUMKULLERN... UND ZUM SCHNEEMANNBAUEN.. UND UND UND...

There's nothing like a nice. warm fire, once you've enjoyed the out-doors!

- And a hot meal by the stove inside!

Things have been incredible busy the past few months, since we really want to get the gallery done by December to have our Christmas exhibition in grand style!

Halloween came and went and this little Simpsons-fella didn't last quite that long...

as you can see one week after he showed quite a bit of spookiness...

Things got really spooky at Granborg Gaard on Halloween... but at least the food was good!

UND FURCHTERREGEND VERKLEIDETE LEUTE... ABER DAS ESSEN WAR GUT UND DIE STIMMUNG GEMÜTLICH!

Finally we're done building the recycling station. Now we and all the B&B-guests can recycle everything in the most ecologic and environmentally friendly manner!

DA WIR EINE ÖKO-PENSION SIND WURDE GERADE DIE NEUE RECYCLING STATION GEBAUT.

Took forever to build and of course the rain had to wash off the paint a number of times!

ALSO KÖNNEN GÄSTE UND HAUSHERREN HIER ALLES PERFEKT RECYCLEN!

Finally the post-box and the entrance sign are done as well!

Moose-safari? Or perhaps rather a crocodile? - Not that far from us! ¤¤¤ Elche und Krokodile in unserer Nähe!

Most people who come to Scandinavia hope to catch a glimpse of a moose... but crocodiles? Well you'd be surprised: it's not as unrealistic or as far away as you might have thought!

Anyways... first some more northern chaps...

"Smålandet" is a moose-farm which is located in southern Sweden and can actually be reached in something like 2½ hours!

We went on a relaxing day-trip the other day and it was really nice and enjoyable!

IN SÜD-SCHWEDEN.

The farm does both have a large closed off area in which you can either drive around in your car or you can take their moose-train

to see all the animals.

Apart from that they have a shop and a cozy café, typical Swedish style,

Crocodiles in Denmark?!

Actually within walking- or cycling-distance from "Granborg Gaard Bed&Breakfast" you find "Krokodille Zoo" which has all kinds of reptiles and as I hear also other animals.

The young gentleman in the yellow T-Shirt below worked there on a trial-basis for a week and came home with 15 crocodile-teeth!

I mean: totally dramatic and strange! You think you're up north, on the arctic ocean! LOL!

It was actually the afternoon of a warm summer's day - not far from our farm in Denmark!

You wouldn't have guessed that, would you?!

However, not too much rain fell on our heads and we had the deck all to ourselves!

And it was really interesting to see all the activity in connection with the new bridge - in spite of the building work not having started at all. I think they're not even at the drawing board... lol!

Anyways. a boat trip is always an experience, you never know what you see or what happens - even if you've done it a million times before!

this is a fireplace which we got from the States. It can be used for in-door-barbecues as well!

This piano is mainly used as a sideboard, the other, working piano, is in the gallery...

Even though it's very cozy, the dining room offers space for many guests.

The sun is about to go down...

And since I'm just about to go out and work on the farm again, I thought, I'd just quickly leave you with a couple of words the local mayor wrote into our guestbook, when we moved from Funen to where we are now. He really wasn't very happy to see us leave and close down the gallery there and one day he came and said: "Now I've finally accepted that you are actually leaving..." Anyways he was (is) a really sweet guy and this is what he had written into the guest book:

"Dear Sarah Sofia and family!

Thanks for really cozy and nice talk during my visit here!

Thank you as well for your initiative of starting the gallery with all these great exhibitions.

It has been a great and positive contribution for the cultural life here on North-Funen.

There are different ways of getting to Denmark, depending on your choice of travel.

These pictures show the ferry from the south Puttgarden-Rødby Havn.

There is another ferry leaving from Rostock (Germany) to Gedser (DK).

Both towns are within easy reach from Granborg Gaard - if you're either going by car, bus or train.

But if you're coming from the west... well...
... your first view of the Danish kingdom might be a little bit misleading...

Arctic Views

The Ice-Crown of Denmark

The world’s largest Island is 52 times bigger than the Danish motherland (autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark) , and lies half way between Europe and North America. The view from the airplane to the majestic landscape is fascinating.

The last time I flew the route – ok, it wasn’t me, it was KLM’s pilot – the weather-god regaled us with brilliant weather to show us the beauty of ice and snow.

Of course, what you see here is just a small part of the arctic landscape. There’s much more to Greenland and looking at that stunning landscape with mountains as high as 3700 m, I dream of visiting one day places like Nuuk, the capital – founded by the missionary apostle Hans Egede; Anmagssalik with it's colourful wooden houses - also the name of the small species of Greenland salmon, or Thule, the probably coldest place on Earth with temperatures falling to minus 60 degree C. Once a week they fly in from Copenhagen and in summer even from Island.

It is almost unimaginable that people and animals survive in that desert-like icy landscape. But there are Geysers in the south around Sydproven; Fjords full of flowers in the summer - even a canyon called flower-valley with more than 50 known species that rise every spring anew. The contrasts couldn’t be bigger.

Of course, Greenland’s biggest resource is ice. But as we know it, that can change pretty fast…

The days are still short and night falls around 16:00.

But the garden around our farm is nicely illuminated.

Christmasmarkets and concerts ¤¤¤ WEIHNACHTSMÄRKTE UND KONZERTE

The other day we went to a concert by Midsjællands Kammerorkester in the chruch of Nørre Alslev.

NEULICH BESUCHTEN WIR EIN KONZERT VOM MIDSJÆLLANDS KOMMERORCHESTER.

And that was a very interesting experience.

DAS WAR EIN SEHR SCHÖNES ERLEBNIS GEWESEN.

Much due to the conductor who you can see in the picture above, the atmosphere, the mood was very relaxed and enjoyable. He really took great care of each and every one of his musicians and made sure that they were all ready and comfortable and that he would never overwhelm them.

DAFÜR KANN MAN SICHER DEM DIREGENTEN DANKEN, DER SEHR GEFÜHLVOLL AUF JEDEN MUSIKER EINGEHT.

He was a very nice gentleman and it was an absolute pleasure to listen to the concert - which was just intended to do that: be an enjoyment for the listeners!

UND SOMIT WAR DIESER OHRENSCHMAUS IN JEDER HINSICHT EIN ANGENEHMES ERLEBNIS!

(not all the usual hidden standards, like where arrogant people try and hammer fine arts into the poor audience, just to show off and get an even bigger ego...!)

Anyway, above you see one of the soloists with the tenor, who was quite amazing, too. Though being very routined as a singer and without doubt a professional, he managed to put enough emotions into the lyrics, so that he was in fact acting out the musical peace quite well and dramatically.

Thanks should also be given to the lady who is the head of the local menighedsråd, who definitely is one of the people behind making everybody always feel welcome in comfortable in her church!

While in Nørre Alslev, we also visited a tiny Julemarket and it was this lady and her carefully handcrafted "nisser" which were quite outstanding!

Strange potaoes ### MERKWÜRDIGE KARTOFFELN

There are many small farms and gardeners in Denmark and lots of them have a little shop on their farm. I will try and introduce some of them to you.

This one is Tårup frugt plantage, close to Stubbekøbing, Falster (54 43 32 15).

And when I come there, what do I find? Not only beautiful natural Christmas decorations, but also some rather strange potatoes in the box on the table in the back, next to the pears.

Anyway, here are some lovely apples and real potatoes, nothing like the crap that they offer in the supermarkets...

And while I'm at it: here are two great apple orchards on Funen: Rosenhøj Frugtplantage - 64 61 34 20 (close to Bogense) and Farsbøllegård in Hårslev, close to Søndersø. And a third one: Hasmarkmosen 18, Otterup.

When you are in Denmark you should really try danish apples, because the quality is just sooo much better than apples from abroad. plus you should know that the laws are different within the european countries. so often what gets sold as ecological apples from the south can easily contain more pesticides than non-ecological apples from Denmark! that's because the law is so very strict in DK, as far as organic produce is concerned and this fires back nastily on those who are trying to produce a healthy and clean product. There are many farmers and owners of orchards which are in fact producing organic products, but who are not allowed to label them this way. so there's only one thing to do: taste your way forward. You can always taste what is real and what is faked!!!

We recently finished the renovations on two guest rooms, which had been quite a big job, since we put a new floor into one, painted the floor in the other and in another room we even insulated and put in a new outside-door... so we've been very, very busy!

WIR HABEN GERADE 2 GÄSTEZIMMER GRÜNDLICH RENOVIERT...

But before I show you more picture... Does anybody still know what a dust sheet is?

It used to be fairly common in Britain and the States, but these days i must say i'm quite in doubt if anybody is really still using these...

Anyway, above you see the dust sheet, it comes over the main matraze and the top matraze and is below the normal sheet on sleeps on.

This is the final result on one of the guest rooms. but I have to say the lighting sucks, it was late at night and I just wanted to have a picture in bright light, so people could see the fabrics. normally I don't think people would have the bright lights on, but rather a cozy smaller lamp...

Also I have to admit, all the furniture do still need painting... well i have painted them white alright, BUT they are in time gonna be decorated with some small delicate old-fashioned flower patterns. But this will take a while to do and in the mean time it also looks alright this way.

This is the other guest room, on a daily bases used by my oldest son as an office/music/entertainment room.

Again the picture was taken in bright light and with a flash, but it's really so cozy at night, because we have all these beautiful small lights there...

So I usually find the boys here, having a cozy time, enjoying music or a film...

The latest addition: my little son finally put this door in. It was quite a job for him and he's neither a carpenter, nor an electrician and still he does all that so well. He build the frame from scratch and didn't only get a perfect fit, he also managed to make it in such a way, that it it secure in case of attempted burglary!

Vordingborg is a town close to where we live and once a year they have this "week of celebration" with lots of concerts and as you can see lots and lots of people having fun together.

Since we had been in Hamburg as well, we only made it to the last concert.

Midsummer-celebration¤¤¤SOMMERFEST

Last tuesday it finally was Sankt Hans - our midsummer-celebration here in Denmark!

LETZTEN DIENSTAG WAS HIER SANKT HANS - DAS MITTSOMMERFEST!

I had spent most of the day preparing food, which you can see here; I'm about to unpack lots and lots of different sallads, desserts, dressings and of course more sausages than we could eat for the barbecue!

WIR SIND NACH MARIENLYST GEFAHREN.

This picture shows an old couple strolling along the beach, but I took it because it reminds me of one of Krøyer's paintings from Skagen-beach...

DORT MACHTEN WIR EIN GROSSES BARBECUE.

The were many, many people on that beach that night, it must have been thousands, but the beach is so long, that it still seemed quite relaxed and not crowded, even though there must have been a fire every 100 metres...

ICH HATTE UNHEIMLICH VIELE SALATE UND DESSERTS GEMACHT...

As you can see, it isn't really that hot here... I am wearing a very thick ski-vest under the arctic jacket and underneath that 3 other layers... still the water was nice and warm... - well everything is relative, isn't it?!

DANN ENDLICH WURDEN DIE GR. FEUER ENTZÜNDET!

These fires aren't all that small... and even though I am quite familiar with fire and do not mind touching flames etc. the heat that it was generating was enormous! You couldn't really get all too close, before you would get the feeling as if it was peeling off your skin... anyway, it was nice and warm on a chilly scandinavian summer's night!

WIR HABEN GESUNGEN UND GEFUTTERT...

They have now finally lit the bonfire behind us. But we're still not done cooking... and eating...

As you can see in the background, there are many more bonfires in the distance... in every direction!

After the barbecue and the songs that people sung by the fire - the spirit was really lovely, everybody was smiling and saying hello, people felt very close to each other and it was a very peaceful get-together, in spite of everybody being strangers...

Anyway... after having stuffed ourselves we hit the town - Marielyst by night!

there was nice life entertainment and I bought a BIG ice-cream for each of the guys... we've had a great night out!

Yesterday evening we only just managed to make it to the strawbeery fields. It must have been almost 8 or so before we started...

Luckily we're fast pickers. And so we were able to fit in the barbecue afterwards - really cozy in the twilight of the summer-garden!

ER ERINNERT MICH SEHR AN UNSER VORHERGEHENDES B&B, WO DIE REHE GANZ DICHT ANS HAUS KAMEN...

It's because it fits very well! we used to have a B&B on Funen (picture below)
and in the winter time all the deer would come very close to the house in order to eat the old apples from the ground or the chest nuts on the other side of the house.

I remember one Chistmas ... watching them through the blinds and they were maybe just two or three metres away. they couldn't hear any sound, but they did spot me through the almost close blinds. Interesting, isn't it?!
Would have to look through too many files to find pics of them, but here is one of the house an the fruitgarden in front of it which they just loved!

Im Garten grünt und blüht jetzt alles

Selbst die Wiese blüht!

Und die Sträucher sehen wunderschön aus!

AND ALL THE BUSHES...

Da ist es schon schön einen so grossen Garten (10000m2) zu haben, wo es so viel Abwechslung gibt und man auch gut spazieren gehen oder joggen kann.

IT'S NICE TO HAVE SUCH A BIG GARDEN. YOU CAN TAKE A WALK OR EVEN JOGG WHILE ENJOYING THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE PARK LIKE TERRAIN.

Ostern wurde aber trotz Paris, B&B-Gästen und Arbeit gefeiert.

WE CELEBRATED EASTER IN SPITE OF ALL THE WORK AND THE GUESTS.

Und natürlich gibt's immer viel Leckeres, aber diesmal so einiges aus Frankreich, wie Käse, Baguettes, Croissants, Vinaigrette, französische Salami...

AND OF COURSE WE HAD BROUGHT A NUMBER OF SPECIALITIES HOME FROM PARIS...

Ausser Ostereiern gab's auch einiges an Geschenken, wie man unten sehen kann.

Sandvig havn ¤¤¤ the harbor of Sandvig ¤¤¤ der Hafen von Sandvig

I was trying to only show you pictures that were exclusively taken at the harbor of Sandvig, but since the PC won't work the way I would like it to work, here is another picture that hopefully should show up on the blog-list.
Although it was taken in northern Sweden, it's funny enough exactly the same way, that our bay in Sandvig looked during the ice-winter of 1996. But first things first...

Once apon a time a pretty naive young family bough a completely run down fisherman's cottage in the harbor of Sandvig, southern Denmark. It was the summer of 1995 and we had no idea what it would take to renovate that house and all the challenges that were ahead of us!

Still life was just as beautiful as it was tough and the amazing surroundings made up for everything!
The picture above was taken one early morning, just outside our old home at the harbor of Sandvig, which is located in southern Denmark, just opposite the isle of Møn.

Sandvig harbor, midsummer night. It almost doesn't get dark, yet we still have about four hours of "light darkness", which can still be called night.
This picture was taken from our little rowing boat, outside our bay, just a few hundred meters from our home.

Sandvig harbor, winter, a look out of my office window, with the sea frozen to the horizon. It was the coldest winter of the last century, 1996. Naturally we had to run out of oil, just when the trucks couldn't get through anymore and all emergency services were uphold by the military and tanks were the only vehicles that could get through to remote places like our harbor... this condition lasted for one week and was completely unique for Denmark which normally hardly ever gets much snow!

Actually, Sandvig isn't to far from our current B&B: Granborg Gaard!

However, there are more beautiful places to visit - close by!

Garnborg Gaard is about a mile from the shore, the most wonderful beach is Marienlyst.

But there are also other places where one can go swimming... one of them is the local new and very lovely swimming hall with different saunas and lots of other facilities.

They even have "candle-light-swimming evenings" and wellness arrangements...

The BIGGEST snowman ever!

This picture shows the snowman our boys built with the neighbours' kids this weekend against the background of our neighbours' farm, right by the entrance of our drive.

Mark says it's the biggest ever, more than two metres tall!

View from our yard onto our neighbour's farm.

Our pond in the back of the garden.

The tiny houses on the horizon are our neighbours and behind the hill is the sea.

The deck chairs are waiting for warmer days...

The garden has an areal of a little more than 10.000 m2 and there are many cosy corners where one can enjoy the sun and the fresh air. Our farm is located on the island of Falster, all connected with bridges, both in the north (approx. an hour to Copenhagen) and in the south (Lolland and it's half an hour to the ship which sails to Germany).

Breakfast has to be an enjoyment!

Maribo is a small, cosy town located on the island of Lolland, about half an hour south of us.

There you can also find this old museum, showing you the livestyle that the danish population used to have in the Country side, several centuries ago.

But Denmark has also got more than 6000 km of coastline and so it's not difficult to find some beautiful beaches or a nice marina like this one in Korsør...

Having written about the ice hotel in other postings, they have exported their success into different cities. Copenhagen is one of them, where you can find an ice bar:

Our surroundings

Our surroundings are beautiful.

This bridge is quite close to us, as a matter of fact you can still just see it from the back of our garden!

This is the coastline of our island.

It is not too far from our home to the island Møn, which is very popular by turists, especially because it's so natural and not at all overrun.

The farm is always decorated in a creative, but traditional manner.

A small Scandinavian breakfast: finnish and swedish bread, swedish and danish cheeses, salmon from Lapland, swedish honey-roasted Christmas-ham and different swedish jams.

"Julmust" is a drink that Swedish children enjoy for Christmas

I have found this piece on a fleamarket and draped it with different flower garlands and silver stars.

We usually have the stove on in winter and it is also frequently used for a barbecue!

The chandellier came from IKEA, but was damaged/had lots of crystals missing. So I had to use my imagination and turned it into a piece of art instead.

This is the heart of our Bed&Breakfast and the place which makes everybody wonder about the history of the farm and whisper: "Just how rich has the farmer been, who once build those buildings...?".
